Mainer Greg Brooks, the "Sea Hunter" captain who recently returned from a humanitarian mission to Haiti, has now launched a new submarine in search of sunken treasure.
The sub, along with a remote-operated vehicle, will be heading 50 miles off the coast of Cape Cod and 750 feet below the surface, where Brooks says the wreckage of the Port Nicholson, a freighter that sank in 1942, is resting, its cargo of platinum, gold, and diamonds still onboard.
The treasure could be worth billions and Brooks plans to share the wealth, promising to spend money in charitable work around the state of Maine and in Haiti.
Brooks has a few more cameras and lights to install on the sub, and then plans to begin his quest sometime in the next several weeks.
Greg Brooks of Gorham, along with a team of fellow treasure hunters, launched a homemade submarine from Boston on Tuesday. They're searching for gold on a sunken ship off the coast of Cape Cod.
Brooks says he hopes the submarine, which can go down about 1,000 feet, will be the final tool he and his team will need to recover the treasure, which he says may be worth up to five billion dollars.
