Rhode Island Lobster Laws

Rhode Island lobster diving info for lobsters caught or landed in state waters.

Please note that as of Jan 1 2007, licenses run from Jan 1 thru Dec 31.

Lobsters: Harvesting by licensed residents only, all lobsters must be measured IMMEDIATELY.

All lobsters measuring less than the legal minimum size of 3-3/8" carapace length must be returned immediately to the water from which taken. Measuring: The carapace length is measured from the rear of the eye socket along a line parallel to the centerline of the body shell to the rear end of the body shell.

There are several management areas in R.I., each with its own size restriction:

Area 2 - Inshore Southern New England (includes Narragansett Bay)
A. Minimum Gauge Size - 3-3/8"
B. Maximum Gauge Size - There is currently no maximum gauge size for American lobster in LFMA 2.

Area 3 - Offshore (basically, out past Block Island)
A. Minimum Gauge Size 3-1/2"*
